Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio was born in 1977 and grew up in Westerly, Rhode Island. During his time in High School he was a Page in the United States Senate in Washington, D.C. He also started an annual holiday in Westerly called Neighbor Day in response to the murder of a young man in town.

Mayor Finizio attended the University of Rhode Island for his undergraduate degree in Political Science. During his time at the University of Rhode Island he was a student member of the Board of Governors for Higher Education. During his time in college he was the recipient of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship which is the federal government’s highest academic scholarship for students interested in public service.
After graduating URI, the Mayor attended New York University for his Master’s degree in Public Administration. While in New York he worked for the New York City Council as a criminal justice policy analyst. The Mayor worked for the City Council during the attacks of September 11th, 2001 and in the months that followed Mayor Finizio worked to enhance the City’s anti-terrorism protocols and re-staff and integrate the New York Fire Department.
In 2005, Mayor Finizio received his law degree from Roger Williams University. He is a licensed attorney in the State and Federal courts in Rhode Island and Connecticut. Additionally, he is licensed to practice in front of the United States Supreme Court. Mayor Finizio returned to Westerly, Rhode Island and won election to the Town Council there in 2006. During his service on the Town Council, he was offered an opportunity to attend, and received a full fellowship for study at, Northeastern University to earn a PhD in urban planning and development. While studying and teaching at Northeastern University, he moved to New London.
Mayor Finizio was elected Mayor of New London in 2011 by a two to one margin.
